A guide to printing posters
Poster printing, from first layout to finished print
How to design a poster and where to have it printed: the standard sizes, what paper and finish change, how a file is prepared, and the tools and services that do the work.
Formats
The standard sizes a poster is printed at
Two families cover nearly every poster. The ISO A series is used across most of the world, and each size is exactly half the one above it. In the United States, posters are mostly printed at a handful of inch sizes.
ISO A series
- A0841 × 1189 mm
- A1594 × 841 mm
- A2420 × 594 mm
- A3297 × 420 mm
- A4210 × 297 mm
Common US sizes
- 11 × 17 inTabloid, the small end of poster printing
- 18 × 24 inA common medium size for notices and rooms
- 24 × 36 inThe usual large size for walls and windows
Choices
What decides how a printed poster turns out
The same design can come back sharp or soft, flat or curled, right for its frame or not. These are the choices that shape the result.
-
Size and viewing distance
A poster is read from wherever people stand when they see it. A notice in a corridor is read from a step away; a poster in a window is read from across a street. The size follows from that distance, and so does how large the type has to be.
Printing at a standard size also keeps the choice of frames, hangers and display stands open.
-
Paper weight and finish
Heavier stock lies flatter, resists creasing and survives being handled and pinned. Lighter stock is cheaper to print in quantity and easier to roll and post.
Matte keeps glare down under bright lights and reads well behind glass. Satin and gloss make colour look deeper, at the cost of reflections.
-
Resolution and file preparation
An image has to carry enough pixels for the size it is printed at. Around 300 pixels per inch at the final size is the figure print services commonly ask for, and large posters viewed from a distance can usually go lower.
Text and logos stay sharpest as vector shapes, and a file exported as a print-ready PDF arrives looking the way it was designed.
-
Framing
Frames are sold in standard sizes, so a poster printed at one of them can go straight into an off-the-shelf frame. A mat adds a margin of card around the print and changes the opening the artwork has to fill.
An odd size usually means a custom frame, which is worth knowing before the layout is fixed rather than after.
-
Event posters and decor posters
An event poster is printed in numbers, read in a few seconds and taken down after the date. Legibility from a distance and turnaround time decide most of it.
A decor poster is one print looked at closely for years. Paper, ink, colour accuracy and how long the print will last matter far more.
File preparation
Before a file goes to the printer
Most problems with a printed poster start in the file. These are the terms a print service uses when it asks for one.
- Bleed
- Background colour and images extended past the trim edge, so a slight shift in cutting never leaves a white sliver. Printers commonly ask for 3 mm or 1/8 inch on each side.
- Safe margin
- A border inside the trim line where nothing important sits, so text is never cut close to the edge.
- Colour mode
- Screens mix light in RGB and presses mix ink in CMYK. Colours that glow on screen, bright greens and blues especially, can print duller.
- Fonts
- Embedded in the PDF or converted to outlines, so the printer sees the type that was chosen rather than a substitute.
- Proof
- A preview or a single test print before the full run, which is where a typo or a colour shift costs least to fix.
- File format
- A high-quality PDF is the safest handover. Many services also accept a large JPEG or PNG for photographic posters.
